Each board is unique, and each type of assessment is unique and demands a thoughtful approach to meet the needs of the institution and the public trust shared by the governing board and its chief executive.
Consistent with best practice, we recommend that assessment of boards and their effectiveness be conducted in conjunction with regular and strategic assessments of the institutional CEO and the institution’s strategic planning process. In short: we view them all as inseparable.
Our approach draws upon perspectives on the board’s effectiveness from interviews with a diverse population of campus stakeholders, both internal and external. Our service allows for objectivity and provides campus stakeholders (faculty, staff, students, alumni, and others) the opportunity to offer anonymous feedback through confidential interviews.
Given that research strongly suggests that the most effective boards are those that exhibit a strong, 2-way symmetric relationship between board chair and institutional CEO, we focus on the dynamic of this critical working relationship between the institutional CEO and the board chair, as well as that between the CEO and the chairs of the standing and ad hoc committees of the board.
