Presidential Performance Assessment

Casagrande Consulting provides advice, assistance, development, and execution of both annual and comprehensive assessments of presidential performance for higher education institutions in both the public and private sectors.

Our approach to both annual and comprehensive assessment is based on proven best practice as defined by the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges (AGB).

Each type of assessment is unique and demands a unique approach to meet the needs of the institution, its governing board, and its chief executive.

Consistent with best practice, we recommend in addition to annual performance assessments (to set compensation, determine course and course corrections if necessary) a comprehensive assessment every three-to-five years.  The comprehensive review takes a broad examination of the president’s performance in areas that include, but are not limited to:

  • The relationship between the president and the board
  • The effectiveness of both the president and the board in that relationship
  • Progress the institution has made in achieving institutional goals since its last comprehensive review.

Our approach draws upon perspectives on the president’s effectiveness from interviews with a diverse population of campus stakeholders, both internal and external.  Our service allows for objectivity and provides campus stakeholders (faculty, staff, students, alumni, and others) the opportunity to offer anonymous feedback through confidential interviews.

Our Comprehensive Assessment

Our services include the following:

  • Assisting the board to create a standing or ad hoc committee charged with sponsoring and overseeing the comprehensive review process
  • Development of a clear process in collaboration with the president
  • Development of a process for communicating with the campus
  • Assisting the president with development of a written self-assessment, based on agreed-upon goals and informed by previous statements from earlier reviews
  • Formation of those to be included in the assessment interviews as well as the protocols for those interviews to ensure fair and consistent data collection
  • Assisting the board in interpreting the assessment results
  • Serving as objective intermediary in face-to-face meetings between the president and the board chair or the committee charged with responsibility for presidential assessment to review the assessment results
  • Providing a comprehensive follow-up report to the full board, including communication from the board chair to the president, describing the process and its results.

Our Annual Assessment

Our services include the following:

  • Assisting the president in preparation of a written self-assessment, based on goals mutually agreed-upon with the board
  • Assisting the board in its evaluation and interpretation of the president’s performance in meeting annual goals
  • Serving as objective intermediary in a face-to-face meeting between the president and the board chair or the committee charged with responsibility for the annual assessment
  • Providing a comprehensive follow-up report to the full board that includes recommendations for actions associated with compensation and/or contract provisions, and also includes recommended communication from the board chair to the president, describing the process and its results.
